In Defense of the Keep; Writing with Nich 5/13

It was right at sunset when the attack started. Most of the Kingdom's forces had already retired for the night, and all the rookies were on guard. Nobody know how large the assault force was, but that didn't matter. What did matter was protecting the keep, and the treasure hidden within. Norig knew this, and that's why he was running to the keep instead of the barracks. The sounds of war horns and the clank of metal on metal filled the air as Norig ran trhough the streets of Claxburn.
Norig ran out of the alley he was travelling down and onto Barker's Avenue, the main market street of the town. For a city under attack, the roads were empty. All the families were locked up inside, and anybody of fighting age had run to the other sice of the city to prepare for the onslaught.
Norig decided that he'd take the main road to get to the keep. He had a better chance to be spotted, but being able to reach the keep faster was worth the risk.
And so he ran. Norig ran as if the fate of the kingdom depended on it. As only he knew, it did, for inside the keep, hidden among the lesser goods, was the staff of Drakmar, taken from the dead hands of the dark wizard himself. If anybody were to obtain it, the consequences would be horrifying.
As Norig turned the corner from Baker Avenue onto the path to the keep, he froze. He was too late. Norig could already see figures outside the keep. Norig couldn't believe that it was all over.
He slowly approached and realized he was only half right. The enemy forces were already at the keep, but there were only two of them, and they had yet to open the door. Norig counted his lucky stars as he started advancing. They hadn't spotted him yet.
Norig took out his throwing knife and took aim. He'd only get one shot at this, so he had to do it right. He made his way to the bottom of the steps, and in one smooth motion, flung the blade at the back of the lizard man's neck. The blade flew through the air and was true to its mark, landing at the base of his neck. The lifeless corpse fell with a thud, alerting the othe rwarrior. Norig was already up to the top of the stairs with another knife drawn by the time the other lizardman turned around. Norig lept on top of the creature and with one swift stab to the neck, silenced him forever.
With them out of the way, the real challenge would begin. Norig slowly opened the keep door. He quickly surveyed the area and found that everything was as it should be. He began by dragging the two lizardmen bodies down the entrance hall and into the keep, but quickly surmised that they could be of use to him.
The entrance to the room of thekeep was a long hall, wide enough for two men to walk down, but not much more. Norig dragged the bodies down to the threshold and stuffed them onto the ground of the hall. Anybody coming through would have to step on the bodies, which would throw off their balance.
After positioning the bodies, Norig took a ready stance at the threshold and waited. He waited for the inevitable, for the assault to reach the keep. Norig knew it waas getting closer by the loudness of the war horn. He also knew that help had to be coming, so all he needed to do was hold out long enough. All alone. Louder and louder the horn blew, until it finally stopped.
There was a commotion outside the door, then it happened. There was a banging on the door, it was shaking off its hinges. Each burst shook Norig to the core, for he knew that in a few seconds, the enemy would storm in.
The door hit the ground with a thud, and one by one the lizardmen started their march in. A few steps in and the lizardman in the lead paused, having seen the bodies of his fallen companions stacked just a few feet down the hall. He shouted back to the other warriors, and they got ready for a fight. The leader slowly approached the threshold, trying to manuever his way around the bodies.
That was when Norig attacked. He lunged from the side, catching the lizardman by surprise. With a quick slash, the lizardman's neck has been cut and he fell to the ground to join his compatriots. Norig glanced down the hall to see his enemies. At once, the lizardmen charged, but each one fell when they reached him. His blades blocked the attacks and felled the creatures one after the other, each body adding to his ever growing defensive barrier. The lizardmen started pulling the bodies away, but Norig would reach in and poke them with the blades, cutting them up.
Then an arrow narrowly flew by his head from the entrance. And then another. And another. Norig slid into cover on the wall, hoping his help would arrive soon. Arrows kept raining down the hall, preventing him from doing anything. He could only hope that his help arrived before more forces came down the hall.
The arrows would come in waves. As soon as there was a break, Norig would glance down the hall, only to be met with another volley. Slowly, the lizardmen were removing the bodies of the fallen, and Norig knew once it was clear that he would be outnumbered.
Finally, the rain of arrows stopped. Norig knew that could only mean the warirors were coming down the hall right now. He turned to face his enemies, his death, ready to fight. Five lizardmen were rushing down hall, and they bowled him over. Norig started slashing wildly, trying to hit anything. He quickly backed up and worked his way to his feet, deflecting attacks from the lizardmen. There was only so much that Norig could do, constantly on the defensive. Eventually, a few knicks got through, and he was bleeding and hurt. Norig got knocked over once again by a well placed shield thrust. Norig opened his eyes and saw the five lizardmen standing above him. They had him, his life was over.
And then, a flash of light from outside the keep made its way inside. The pure brightness was all Norig saw before his eyes closed and blackness surrounded him. It was finished. Help had come.

This is where I'm throwing my unedited short stories. I'm trying to get in the habit of finishing something, because I never do. I figured that short stories would be easier because they're, well, short. So without further ado
